Anon: IIRC I was going for a kitchen knife; I figured paper towels would bring my face too close to it in this case, since it was on a shelf rather than the floor.
agent57: It seems harder to hit a spider with a knife then even a paper towel. I'd definitely go for a blunt or swatting type object.
