that the preferred term when you were studying fiction was "space opera", though you have no idea how accepted that term was outside of your tiny little department at Nomark U

I always thought that "space opera" was a term that originated to describe the old 50's pulp space romance comics books that little George Lucas grew up with: and that it was only applied (erroneously, in my opinion) to Star Wars in recognition of that homage.
I really don't know. The serial melodramas like Flash Gordon (which was still in reruns even in the early 80s) lend a lot to Star Wars, but are also quite simplistic narratives where much is explained to the audience rather than inferred by them: not too far removed from the Chorus of a classical Greek play in some regards. Or you could view 'opera' in the sense of 'collected works', as smaller stories are told amid the larger narrative, or in the omnibus sense of "the author's work, collected"
...as it is a rather extensive exercise, even within the first movie, at realistic world-building, giving a sense of something more dramatic than the relatively simple story would otherwise suggest. : In that sense it is more like operatic theater, where the emphasis is on the lavishness of the production.
I thought that it meant "opera" in the sense of melodrama: or, as you say, in the lavishness or outlandishness of the production.
Wikipedia sez: The term has no relation to music and it is analogous to "soap opera".
I think what we're really learning here : is what an absolute cluster the categorisation and study of fiction has become.
I think that all popular fiction is just so inbred and derivative that any attempt to categorize it will get you nowhere: Let's just put it all in a big box labeled "Paramasturbatory male fantasies" and throw it in the dumpster.
OK: but only because there's a chance of a lick job.
